ArcelorMittal's Canadian unit fined $110,000 as worker loses leg

ArcelorMittal Tubular Products Canada Inc, a subsidiary of the global steel giant, has been fined $110,000 for violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) after a worker lost his leg due to injury. A labour ministry statement…said that a worker at the company's facilities…got seriously hurt when using a lift truck to move steel coils from a cradle...As a result of the injury, his leg was amputated below the knee. Being his employer…Mittal Tubular Products has pleaded guilty under the safety Act…In addition to the fine, the steel company has also been slapped a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge,as required by the Provincial Offences Act.
