Bangladesh Employer Renders Union Members Destitute

Garment workers employed by one of Bangladesh’s biggest consortiums [Square Fashions (part of Square Group)] have been thrown out of their jobs and their dormitories and then beaten and robbed – all because they joined a union...“After Swedish retail customer H&M [Hennes & Mauritz] called for the reinstatement of the workers, some of those who were dismissed without severance were reinstated, but not before being forced to sign blank sheets of paper, and having to ‘justify their absence’. Another retailer, Puma, has said it will not place orders with the company until the issue is resolved”.
