Brazil: Court suspends and cancels oil and gas exploration activities to ensure environmental security & protection of indigenous peoples in Juruá Valley

December 16th 2015 was marked by an important victory for the No Fracking Brazil campaign, when the federal judge, Dr. João Paulo Morretti de Souza in the...State of Acre, decided for the suspension and cancellation of all oil and gas exploration activities, including the unconventional method – Fracking – in JURUÁ VALLEY, located between the states of Acre and Amazonas. The court decision was issued due to a Public Civil Action iniciated by the Federal Attorney Dr. Thiago Pinheiro Correa...against the Brazilian Federal Government, IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment), ANP (National Petroleum and Gas Agency) and PETROBRAS, with the purpose of ensuring the environmental security of the region and the protection of Indigenous Peoples. Federal Attourney´s attention to the issue began from the discussions provoked by the campaign No Fracking Brazil, through the coordinating institutions, 350.org and Coesus, with the regional partner the Indigenous Missionary Council – CIMI, holding meetings, lectures, public hearings, interviews on radio and television in the Juruá Valley, which has motivated the local society, politicians, the media, university and Indigenous Peoples to support the initiative of the Federal Attourney´s office, a public civil action based on the grounds of preservation of life and sustainability, countering aggressive models of exploitation of fossil fuels...In December, 350.org was formally requested by the indigenous peoples of the Javari Valley,...recognized as the most important stronghold of Isolated Peoples...of the planet, to defend them against the threat of exploitation of oil and gas in their Indigenous Territories and was given a mission to help making their voices against oil and gas heard worldwide...
