Colombia: Institute for Human Rights & Business launches project to assess current impacts & future risks of mining on communities’ rights

“IHRB embarks on mining initiative in Colombia”

Mining is a strategic part of Colombia’s economy but it is also a source of acute concern for communities and civil society organisations over human rights abuses within the sector.  The centre for responsible business in Latin America established by IHRB in Bogotá – Centro Regional de Empresas y Emprendimientos Responsables (CREER) – is launching a new initiative to assess the current impacts and future risks of mining on human rights in Colombia.  The new CREER-IHRB initiative will examine sub-sectors of economic importance affecting human rights such as coal, gold and construction materials… to produce and promote evidence-based proposals to strengthen government policies and business practices across the mining sector in line with international human rights standards.
