Commentary: Discussions on implementing UN Guiding Principles in mining & metals industry at UN Forum

"Third United Nations’ Business and Human Rights Forum highlights the challenges of implementing the UN Guiding Principles in the mining and metals industry", Dec 2014

On 4 December, following the conclusion of the 2014 forum, ICMM and the Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB) hosted an international workshop on human rights in the mining and metals industry... Forty representatives from civil society, companies and government reflected on the challenges of implementing the Guiding Principles within the mining and metals industry. Particular areas of focus included the conduct of robust due diligence, providing effective judicial and non-judicial avenues of remedy in cases of human rights infringements, and future challenges in terms of the business and human rights agenda...Aidan Davy, ICMM’s Deputy President and Senior Program Director, reflected: “The power of these events is in bringing together knowledgeable, cross-sectoral perspectives on human rights in a climate of constructive engagement and challenge. We are profoundly grateful to everyone who attended for the quality and value of their participation."
