DAVIS: Statement by Leon Davis, Chairman of Westpac, Deputy Chairman of Rio Tinto

"In a country like Australia, one of the things that corporations needed to do was to look at perhaps the most disadvantaged in our society, and they were the indigenous people. We did that at Rio. But it was one of those great confluences of doing what's socially right and doing what's right in the business sense. In recognising the claims of indigenous people and saying that we're going to negotiate with them...I think was a big step forward in the relationship and I think, in a business sense, it helped us advance the business."
