The recent incident at Yamfo in the Brong-Ahafo region of Ghana in which representatives of the NGOs, WACAM and Oxfam, were arrested is regrettable and of concern to Newmont. It appears that the event may have been caused by misunderstanding and a lack of communication. Newmont Ghana is committed to open and transparent processes and to supporting the human rights of the communities in which we operate... The company supports any mechanism or organization that chooses to take part in the participation process or assist the communities in their participation [in consultations with the company]. Furthermore, we fully support the rights of others to express opinions that differ from those of the company and accept that mechanisms for expressing views may be associated with the company’s process or external to it... Newmont is ready and willing to work with any credible, independent, external evaluation of our performance...
