Beginning in 2005, Newmont has applied its global system of internal standards to the Akyem project. With respect to human rights, Akyem is now guided by a set of requirements which includes a Human Rights awareness standard... In addition, Akyem also follows conditions as established via a security forces management standard which requires the site to provide safety and security within a framework that conforms to the Voluntary Principles of Security and Human Rights... Akyem developed and implemented a formal grievance system beginning in January 2006...
