Enel response

Enel closely monitors its relationships with suppliers and any issues undergo specific assessment by the Group. The Code of Ethics, the Human Rights Policy, the Sustainability Report and the Environmental Report are all substantive elements of a Group policy aimed at ensuring compliance with and implementation of the best international standards in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). More specifically, our active participation in Better Coal is intended to promote the continuous improvement of CSR in the coal supply chain, beginning with the mines themselves. Colombia is the world’s fourth largest exporter of coal for electricity generation, with about 80 million tonnes. Most of this coal (about 70%) is shipped to the European market, while the remainder is sold in Latin America. The Enel Group imports coal from Colombia to fuel a number of its plants, as do nearly all other European utilities, using Drummond and Glencore (Prodeco) as suppliers as well. With regard to the nature of Enel’s specific relationships with those companies, there is no doubt that, if the allegations levelled by SOMO report at Drummond and at Glencore (Prodeco) should be confirmed, or, more generally, any significant ethical violation is found, Enel would not hesitate to take all necessary action against them, as is in fact already provided for in our agreements with our suppliers.
