French FM Kouchner: Oil giant Total would not be spared from possible sanctions vs Myanmar

France is drawing up possible sanctions against the ruling junta in Myanmar — and oil giant Total SA would not be spared from any such penalties, the French foreign minister said Tuesday… Kouchner…said that in the past, corporate withdrawals from Myanmar were just quickly replaced by Chinese capital or by that of the junta itself. "So is it an advantage? I'm not sure," he said of sanctions. "If there are sanctions, Total will not be exonerated — it's not possible. Total and all the others (companies) who work in Myanmar."… Total…said any "forced withdrawal" would simply clear the way for another company to step into its place.
