French oil giant Total rules out exit from Myanmar [Burma]

Total, the French oil giant long criticized by human rights organisations for its presence in Burma, has no plans to withdraw from the Southeast Asia country, its chief executive said yesterday. ``It is not by leaving this country that democracy will see progress,'' CEO Thierry Desmarest told the company's annual general meeting in Paris, noting ``a close link between economic development and improvement of human rights.
