Groups appeal to World Bank unit over Newmont mine [Ghana]

Development groups have appealed to the World Bank's private-sector lending arm to postpone approval this week of $125 million in loans for gold major Newmont Mining's Ahafo project in Ghana until all social and environmental issues are resolved... In a January 24 letter to board directors the six groups...said financing should be withheld until problems are resolved with the resettlement of families around the mine; measures are implemented that protect ground and surface water and surrounding forests near the tailing and storage dams; and a monitoring mechanism is established to ensure standards are maintained. [also refers to ExxonMobil, Glamis Gold]
