Immediate Suspension: Organizations demand Guatemalan government to end mining operations

Several peasant, indigenous and environmentalist organizations from Guatemala are demanding the government comply with a resolution of the International Labour Organization to immediately suspend some of the mining activities carried out by Cementos Progreso and Montana Exploradora [Marlin Mine, part of Goldcorp]...The companies are accused of not complying with several regulations and not carrying out consultation process with the local population…The Commission of Experts…of ILO…said that Cementos Progreso should assess the social, spiritual, cultural and environmental impacts of the activities together with the local people, who have the right to know in which ways the operations of the company will affect them. In terms of Montana Exploradora, the Commission…demand[ed] new investigations, a prior consultation process with local communities and detailed information.
