Mining company, community in bitter dispute over relocation compensation [So. Africa]

Fifteen women this week faced down bulldozers in their fields in a protest against being removed from their lands. The women - among about 10 000 villagers facing removal from their lands near Mokopane in Limpopo province - were removed from the area by police amid claims they had been beaten to make way for bulldozers from the Anglo Platinum mining company. Now the government is to step in to try to resolve the bitter dispute over compensation for their removal to nearby settlements...Simon Tebele, the Anglo Platinum spokesperson, denied the company was guilty of bullying tactics, saying they had followed the rules to the letter. "This is a just a small group of disgruntled people who are behaving the way they are. They are being instigated by parties from the outside who do not even live in the area. This country is democratic. We have negotiated with the whole community. The reality is that the people know we have consulted them quite extensively," he said.
