Concerns continue to be expressed by NGOs in Japan, Mozambique, and internationally, regarding the Japanese led large scale agricultural development project in Mozambique, known as the ProSavana project. NGOs allege that local farming communities are at risk of being driven off their land by the project, and that they are not being consulted in a meaningful manner. In a recent statement, several NGOs (Japan International Volunteer Centre, Africa Japan Forum, Oxfam Japan, ATTAC Japan, Citizen’s Association for Development in Mozambique, No! to Land Grab Japan) state that while the Masterplan for the ProSavana project has been recently released, it is available only in electronic form, and only in Portuguese, making it inaccessible to local communities.
