Myanmar: Arbitration Council orders reinstatement & compensation of Han Jen garment factory worker

A garment worker from the Han Jen Factory must be rehired and compensated, the Arbitration Council has ruled in a rare victory in a labourer’s favour.

Worker Ko Ye Ko Tun was one of nearly 100 workers recently laid off by Han Jen Factory in Shwe Pyi Thar’s industrial zone, in his case because he allegedly came to work late. The Arbitration Council decided the firing violated regulations because Ye Ko Tun was not given a warning.

The council also said the factory submitted forged documents during the hearing.

Han Jen factory’s HR manager U Khin Maung Win told The Myanmar Times…that workers like Ko Ye Ko Tun were fired because they were late for work on as many as 19 different occasions.

“We can’t accept the council’s decision. So we will appeal this case at the central arbitration council. This was a one-sided decision,” he said…
