Newmont boss could face three years for pollution [Indonesia]

Prosecutors on Friday demanded a three-year prison sentence for the American executive of a gold-mining company accused of dumping dangerous levels of mercury and arsenic-laced waste into an Indonesian bay... "There is no pollution and there has been no crime," [Newmont executive Richard Ness] said as quoted by Associated Press... The case has been complicated by conflicting test results on water near Newmont's now-defunct mine... A police report showed that mercury and arsenic levels in the Buyat Bay were well beyond national standards, but tests by the World Health Organization, government agencies and several independent groups found that pollutants in the water were within normal limits.
