Nigeria: Multinationals and Basic Amenities

Last week the Government received what may be called another subtle reminder of its duties towards the people. A national newspaper quoted Chevron Nigeria Limited as saying that the Government at all levels should take sole responsibility for providing the people with basic amenities...Chevron's statement may not be entirely misplaced. Some governments have still not performed their duties towards the masses...The multinational oil companies should however not down play their social role within their area of operations. They should regard themselves as partners in developmental activities.
