Of good will and evil: PT Newmont intends to create a ‘Good-Will Foundation’ to carry out environmental monitoring around Buyat Bay [Indonesia]

[At a February meeting in North Sulawesi with community leaders,] President Director of PT Newmont Minahasa Raya [part of Newmont]...spoke of preparations to establish a good-will foundation for the local residents... Ness told meeting attendees that the foundation would manage approximately Rp300 billion to carry out environmental monitoring around Buyat Bay... It is not only the residents of Buyat who are suspicious of the good-will agreement made between Newmont and the [national Indonesian] government. A number of non-government environmental organizations have also voiced concerns...Newmont’s repeated rejection of allegations that it contaminated Buyat Bay still breeds suspicion among local residents.
