[PDF] Counting the Cost: Corporations and human rights abuses in the Niger Delta [Nigeria]

This report examines the role of Shell in human rights abuses committed by Nigerian government forces and other armed groups between 2000 and 2010...The past decade in the Delta has brought brutal government crackdowns, the rise of armed groups and a multiplicity of intense conflicts. While primary responsibility for human rights violations falls on the Nigerian government and other perpetrators, Shell has played an active role in fuelling conflict and violence in a variety of forms. This report finds that: - Shell’s close relationship with the Nigerian military exposes the company to charges of complicity in the systematic killing and torture of local residents... - In the absence of proper supervision and controls, Shell contractors, including multinationals like Halliburton, Daewoo and Saipem (part of Eni), have replicated many of Shell’s mistakes. [also refers to Dresser Kellog (part of Halliburton), KBR, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and local subsidiaries of Chevron, ExxonMobil, Eni, Total, Addax Petroleum (part of Sinopec) Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas Ltd (joint venture Shell, NNPC, Total, Eni, Willbros, Caverton, Sonar Ltd, BG Technical, Baywood Continental, Niger Delta Petroleum Resources, TSKJ consortium (joint venture Halliburton, KBR Eni, Saipem Technip, JGC Corporation) Samsung, Chiyoda, Entrepose, Endessa, AMEC, ABB, Stolt Offshore, ClampOn, Caverton, Dorman Long Engineering].
