[PDF] Fifth Report on Tangguh LNG Project [Indonesia/W. Papua]

At the regional level, support [for the project] is...strong, but expectations of delivering benefits are high and there are complaints about specific issues... Security issues, while a concern, have been ameliorated by the adoption and broad acceptance of the integrated community based security program... Thus far, there have been no serious problems relating to either environment or safety... Nonetheless, given the recent safety/maintenance issues faced by BP...it is critical that BP continue to oversee its contractors and assure itself and the public regularly that safety and environmental protection remain fully effective... Although real challenges still exist, Tangguh has the potential to become a recognized world-class model for energy development, having a positive effect on both indigenous communities and the broader environment. In order to accomplish this goal, however, several issues confronting the Project, not entirely within BP’s control, must be met more forcefully and directly.
