[PDF] Sustainability in the Petroleum Industry: Theory and Practice of Voluntary Self-Commitments

This study examines, from the perspective of Business Ethics, how the member companies in the Association of the German Petroleum Industry as well as their international parent and sister companies engage for more sustainability, in particular Agip Deutschland (part of Eni), ConocoPhillips Germany, Deutsche BP, Esso Deutschland, OMV Deutschland, ORLEN Deutschland, Shell Deutschland Oil, and Total Deutschland. It analyzes on the basis of numerous examples how these companies, faced with serious deficits in the institutional framework for global markets, endeavor to contribute to sustainable development by voluntary commitments to social and ecological criteria and to integrity standards for organizational transparency.
