Pollution at Cocoa Cola Factory [Liberia]

Residents of…Paynesville staged a non-violent protest…threatening to stop LCCBC [Liberia Cocoa Cola Bottling Company] operations in the community…if nothing is done to address their concerns…[R]esidents…accused the company of pollution, bad labor practices and insensitivity to its social responsibilities…Community Youth Chairman, Stewart S. Labede told journalists that the community was fed-up with the inhumane treatment received from the company…[R]esidents claimed, when chemicals are used to wash empty bottles…the company releases the polluted water…into the community-a situation that has caused serious health hazard…Bad smell was observed near the LCCBC compound…[A] resident…[accused] LCCBC…[of] denying them…fresh air, safe drinking water and well water…“LCCBC…management intimidates…work[ers]…We want government to intervene to improve the living condition of our people,”…Amos W. Morris…said…he has not seen LCCBC’s social responsibility…no student can boast of benefiting from the company- no electricity- no school.
