Puma releases ‘true’ carbon emission cost

Puma has become one of the first global companies to release what it thinks is the true cost of its carbon dioxide emissions. The company says the cost is more than three times higher than what it pays for permits under European environmental legislation...Jochen Zeitz, Puma’s chief executive, who is also chief sustainability officer at PPR, said publication of the data was a useful step to “providing transparent benchmarks” about emissions of carbon dioxide and related gases, such as methane, that are associated with global warming. Findings by consultancies PWC and Trucost show that the true cost of the company’s emissions of greenhouse gases is at €66 ($93) a tonne...The €66-a-tonne figure is the consultancies’ estimate of the cost to the world economy of future damage such as hurricanes and other unusual weather events that are likely to be caused by climate change sparked by rising concentrations of greenhouse gases...They also said that the amount of water used to make Puma products last year was 77m tonnes or a total cost of €47.4m. Most of the greenhouse gas emissions and water use were not from the direct operations of Puma but from the activities of several hundred suppliers around the world, mainly in Asia...Alan McGill, a partner at PWC, said : “More companies may need to consider disclosures of this kind, as a result of the legislation that is under consideration in a number of companies that could make the publication of this kind of data mandatory.”
