Response to John O’Reilly’s comment on the November 2005 incident involving shooting of protesters by police at New Abirem, Ghana

...the shooting at Akyem was a tragedy... We are taking measures to minimize the chances of anything like this happening again. We have developed better grievance procedures and are having many more regular discussions on the ground in the communities. The company is working with the police to assist them in gaining a better understanding of the Voluntary Principles. Finally, we are working at the national level with the Chamber of Mines to discuss with the Ghanaian Government on how the Voluntary Principles can be more formally and effectively adopted in Ghana.
