Russia: Coal mining results in “contamination of air, water, and soil, high mortality and sickness rates” among local communities, including indigenous people; says new NGO report

"The Cost of Coal: Impact of Russian coal mining on the environment, local communities and indigenous peoples", December 2015

...[P]eople of Kuzbass...get used to open-cut mines operating and huge trucks roaring right out of their windows. Shot operations destroy houses, and spoil piles grow up around. Air and rivers are contaminated with coal dust, and fertile land is being devastated...Number of official statistics provides evidence for contamination of air, water, and soil, high mortality and sickness rates in Kemerovo Oblast...Some cases are absurd. A map enclosed to the mine development project documentation near Rassvet village by Energougol company didn’t show the village itself. Therefore, its residents living in 300 meters from explosions and other mine operations were left deprived without rights for compensation and relocation...The local authorities being controlled by the coal companies fail to recognize the damage caused by coal industry. Mining developments often meets resistance from local communities, including of indigenous people. Expansion of coal production planned by the regional government would definitely produce more confrontation.
