SAfrica's NUM says worker killed at Angloplat mine

South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Wednesday a worker had been killed at Anglo Platinum's Lebowa platinum mine. Anglo Platinum spokesman Simon Tebele said the worker had been killed by a scrapper winch on Wednesday afternoon... South Africa, the world's top source of platinum and a major gold producer, has a bad safety record for underground mining... The union has called on members to stay away from work each time a mineworker is killed in South Africa's mines. About 5,000 workers stopped work at DRD Gold's Blyvoor mine...to observe a day of mourning for a worker killed at the mine last week. The union said another 6,000 workers would down tools at Harmony Gold's Elasrand mine...to mourn a worker who died at that mine as well.
