So. Africa: Thousands of Wits University students, staff protest against institution's "exploitative" outsourcing practices

'Huge protest decries Wits outsourcing practice', 6 Oct 2015:...“Stop outsourcing! Stop exploitation! Insource!”…[read a] placard at Witwatersrand University…as..almost 2 000 people staged…[a] protest...[Student movement] Oct6…organised similar protests at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and University of Cape Town (UCT)…Vice-chancellor Adam Habib [said]…the institution simply could not afford [to provide fixed employment for all workers]…Oct6 said: “When workers lost…direct employment…with universities…salaries [were] cut by up to 40%, [and] they…lost…benefits…including the right for their children to attend university for free. “They also lost work security…[and] cannot petition the university for better working conditions because…they are [now] the responsibility of private companies.
