Tanzania: Acacia Mining repairs roads serving local communities after heavy rains render them impassable

"Mining Company Repairs Tarime Damaged Roads"

Foreign investors, hitherto given cold reception by some residents in Mara Region, are now seen as saviours and key development partners. A good example is Acacia Mining Plc which operates a number of gold mines in the Lake Zone regions...The mining company was on Friday last week asked to help in repairing a piece of road rendered impassable by heavy rains at Mogabiri village on the outskirts of Tarime town. The request was made by Tarime District Commissioner Mr Glorious Luoga after heavy rains damaged the road making it impassable. According to the Acacia Community Relations Department at North Mara Gold Mine, the miner repaired the road connecting Tarime town with other parts of the district.

"Acacia is part of the community and it was important to act fast after hearing that people face transport difficulties," said Mr Zakayo Kalebo, a senior official in the Community Relations Department at North Mara Gold Mine. The job was done by Kiribo Limited, a local contractor that undertakes a wide range of projects at the mine. "We postponed other duties and rushed to Mogabiri village to repair the road," Kiribo Limited Manager Mr Selestne Mwita said. A number of residents thanked the leadership of North Mara Gold Mine for repairing the road to restore commuter services..."Many people rely on this road," Mr Luoga said after participating in the repair work. He thanked North Mara Gold Mine for assisting the project at a short notice.
