Tanzania Takes a Critical Step in Putting Natural Gas to Work for Human Development

Recent natural gas finds and ongoing mining activities in Tanzania have sparked extensive national debate on how the nation should benefit from its wealth...[M]any in Tanzania are reflecting on the country’s experience with large-scale mining...[where] the sector has not resulted in significant government revenues and has failed to integrate successfully into the rest of the economy. Unrolling over a two-year period, the project will start with a government-led benchmarking process...[It has a] diverse expert panel of sixteen local specialists drawn from government, civil society, the private sector and academia...Once complete, the benchmarking exercise will inform a wide variety of activities under a separate implementation phase. Activities will include policy analysis and design to improve the legal framework; institutional capacity building to improve implementation; and activities to build a critical mass of informed citizens to provide political support for, and oversight of, the legal framework and institutions.
