Uganda: Buliisa Farmers Angry With Total

Several farmers in the western district of Buliisa are angry that they got little compensation after French oil giant Total E&P destroyed their crops during its oil exploration activities early this year. The most affected are people in Nguedo sub-county where the company has eight oil wells and encroached on several gardens while creating roads to access exploration areas inside Murchison Falls national park. The farmers say they were compensated Shs 700 per square metre of destroyed cassava crops, which to them is far below real value. Following the farm-down of Tullow Oil's properties in 2010, Total is in charge of block 1 in Nguedo...When contacted for a comment, Total E&P Corporate Affairs Manager, Ahleme Friga-Noy, said the company had used rates generated by the district land board and approved by the Chief Government Valuer. "Total E&P cannot carry the blame for meagre compensation because we used the rates approved by the government," said Friga-Noy.
