Unions demand action on mine carnage [So. Africa]

Mine deaths at Gold Fields and Anglo Platinum (Angloplat) [part of Anglo American] continued to mount last week, leading to calls from industry trade unions for action to halt the carnage. Solidarity...representative Chris Pienaar said there had been 10 fatalities at Gold Fields' Driefontein mine in the past six weeks...Gold Fields spokesperson Willie Jacobsz said there had been 10 mine deaths at Driefontein since the start of the year. "There have been very big safety interventions at Gold Fields' local operations."...Angloplat spokesperson Simon Tebele said: "Angloplat is very serious about the safety of its employees." But [Lesiba] Seshoka [spokesperson for the National Union of Mineworkers ] said that while Angloplat was investing a lot of money in raising production, it was spending little on safety.
