Unions representing flight attendants and other U.S. airline workers say the hiring practices for female employees of three Gulf airlines that fly in and out of Newark Liberty and John F. Kennedy international airports are "repugnant." "These carriers require their female employees to obtain permission before getting married or pregnant and ban lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from employment," read a joint statement issued today by the Association of Flight Attendants; the Association of Professional Flight Attendants; the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The sexism and discrimination charges involve Emirates and Etihad Airways, both of the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar Airways, a state-owned airline...Emirates and Qatar did not respond to requests for comment.
