Farmers Group Inc. will pay $4 million and strive to promote more female lawyers as part of a settlement in a pay discrimination class action brought by current and former female attorneys for the insurer...A spokesman for Farmers, represented by Paul Hastings, declined to comment...There are many nonmonetary elements to the deal. For example, Farmers will have to hire an independent consultant to review and possibly modify its employment policies regarding attorney compensation, salary grade placement, performance ratings and promotions. Farmers also has to make "best efforts," according to the settlement, to increase the representation of women in the higher attorney pay brackets. For example, it is aiming to increase the percentage of female attorneys in Salary Grade 40­—the highest pay level—from 16 percent to 21 percent over the next three years...
