Jordan: Report by a local community reveals labour rights abuses faced by construction workers at Teejan ; co. did not respond

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre has received a report from a local community in Jordan regarding serious labour rights violations committed by Teejan Trading & Contracting Company L.L.C in Jordan. The report alleges that Teejan has been exposing its workers to unsafe working conditions as the company did not provide them with safety equipment despite the hazardous work conditions, and that workers lack health insurance. The report further alleges that the company dismissed workers who led strikes to protest against the delay in the payment of wages. Finally, the report also claims that the company has dismissed 150 workers amid the coronavirus pandemic and is now depending on subcontracted and migrant workers instead.

The report recommends, among other things, that Teejan establishes a project-level grievance mechanism to address workers' complaints regarding violence and harassment in the workplace and provide adequate protections for affected workers. The report further recommends that Teejan and its subcontractors should ensure safe work conditions by providing workers with safety equipment and tools as well as providing training on health and occupational safety measures to all workers.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre contacted Teejan for a response; the company did not respond.
