Nigeria: Uber increases fare costs by 13 per cent following protests over low wages & working conditions

... Uber has hiked fares of its economy option (UberX) by up to 13 per cent in Lagos starting Friday, May 11, 2021. The hike comes amid the ongoing protest of low wages and working conditions by the drivers.

On April 19th, Uber drivers in Lagos went on strike to draw attention to what they say are decreasing wages for drivers and a distressing lack of job security — while calling on passengers to temporarily boycott the ride-hailing services, too.

Today in an email sent to its driver, Uber stated that it had reviewed its pricing to enable drivers to earn more at specific periods during the day. It also added that the new billing structure would affect both peak and off-peak periods.

“At Uber, we remain committed to providing a reliable earning opportunity for driver-partners, as well as a reliable and affordable service for riders. With this in mind, starting 11th May 2021, we are increasing prices on UberX by about 13%,” it stated...
