Construction giant GP Zachariades began facing financial difficulties in 2016, when the Bahraini government and other private clients delayed payments to the company. The company, in turn, delayed payments to thousands of employees for two and a half months, prompting worker protests in 2016. As of 2020, workers in Bahrain are still waiting to be paid.
