Ecuador: Two Mirador copper mine's tailings dams are at risk of collapse and bursting, according to technical studies
Environmental and human rights organisations presented technical studies indicating a possible risk of collapse and rupture of the tailings dams of the Mirador copper mine, the largest in the country, owned by EcuaCorriente, which could cause an environmental disaster that they compare to that of Brumadinho (Brazil) in 2019. The wave of toxic materials would pass through several indigenous communities, which would have minutes to carry out evacuation procedures.
The BHRRC invited EcuaCorriente to comment on the study, but the company did not respond.
