Activists and local residents in Karachi, Pakistan, have been protesting house demolition, evictions, and the expansion of the giant luxury estate Bahria Town in their ancestral lands. Indigenous communities have opposed the Karachi project since its launch in 2014. On Monday, 7 June 2021, 120 leaders and activists of the Sindh Action Committee (SAC) were charged and brought before a Pakistani antiterrorism court for allegedly resorting to violence, ransacking and torching private properties in Bahria Town Karachi (BTK) during their protest against the mega housing scheme. They were remanded in police custody, while the judge also ordered medical treatment to some suspects, who were produced in injured condition. This incident follows a previous one of May 7, 2021, when 14 Karachi indigenous villagers & activists were reportedly injured by Bahria Town security guards and staff.
