ArcelorMittal response

Thank you for your recent correspondence.

As we have said in our previous engagement with you here and here, after every fatal accident that occurred at ArcelorMittal Temirtau while the company was in our ownership, our priority was to support the bereaved families as best we could, while acknowledging that no amount of support can ever adequately compensate for their loss. Given that on 8 December we announced the sale of ArcelorMittal Temirtau to the Government of Kazakhstan, we have nothing further to add to our previous comments.

With regard to your broader enquiry on our policies and approach to human rights, ArcelorMittal is committed to respecting all internationally recognised human rights and adhering to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (‘UNGPs’). Our renewed human rights policy, published in November 2023 outlines our commitments and guiding principles, shaping our approach, decision-making, actions, and behaviors regarding human rights with further detail in the accompanying explanatory note.

We are committed to implementing ongoing human rights due diligence, recognizing the need for a tailored approach that considers our industry, business sizes, and operating circumstances. This involves proactively identifying actual and potential human rights risks and impacts through a saliency assessment process prioritizing risks based on their potential severity of impact on people, aligned with best practices.

To manage identified human rights risks and impacts, we are committed to integrating and embedding them into our core business processes. We will monitor and measure the effectiveness of our processes and actions in response to identified human rights risks and impacts. This measure will ensure continuous learning and improvement in our approach to upholding human rights standards.

In 2023, along with the update of our human rights policy, we have conducted a corporate-level saliency assessment aligned with best practices. We also developed new human rights training for employees and suppliers, developed a supplier due diligence tool that is currently in a pilot phase, and are in the process of updating our corporate grievance mechanism.

Additional details are currently available on our website under "Human rights | ArcelorMittal" and will be disclosed in our annual sustainability reporting documents.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you require any additional information or assistance.
