Asda's response re- civil society letter on poor living conditions in Almería

Asda works with our suppliers, other retailers, and membership organisations such as the Spanish Ethical Trade Forum to ensure the highest worker welfare standards are in place, in-line with our Standards for Suppliers. Our Standards include expectations not only on provision of safe working environments but also that living accommodation is safe and habitable.

Accommodation standards have been a focus for Asda, where we have worked with partners to define expectations. In Spain we are focused on working with the SETF to improve standards and set expectations.

Accommodation that is within the profile of a site, adjacent or within the site perimeter, will be included within the scope of a SMETA audit that is undertaken by our supply chains. Where issues are identified Asda will investigate alongside partners and other retailers to ensure that standards are upheld and, where required, issues are resolved. Beyond this we work with membership organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations to assess risks, build capacity, and understand where best we can improve identified living standards as required.
