Brazil: Lumber suppliers linked to large retail companies involved in contemporary slavery

A fabricante abastece as lojas do Walmart no Brasil, Carrefour….

The network supplying wood for Tramontina's household items has included, in recent years, a lumber mill with contemporary slave labor. The manufacturer supplies Walmart stores in Brazil, Carrefour….

The investigated cases begin in two sawmills…. One of them is Madeireira Iller.

Another case involves Bonardi da Amazônia….

Tramontina stated…"In the visits made by Tramontina, it was possible to verify the existence of cafeteria, lodgings, use of uniforms and personal protective equipment. In case there were workers in other places, this did not come to the knowledge of the company "….

…Carrefour reported that it repudiated any form of work analogous to slavery or practices contrary to environmental legislation.

…Tradelink Madeiras was one of Bonardi's customers in the Amazon region.

…According to Tradelink, the agreement signed between Bonardi da Amazônia and the Public Labor Ministry - which was duly complied with, according to the Ministry itself - was the reason why the company decided to keep the logging among its suppliers….

…[O]ne of Tradelink's customers in the United States was USFloors…"I personally went to the Tradelink plant in Brazil and felt that among all the factories visited, Tradelink was the only one with adequate procedures to ensure compliance with local and international regulations," said Philippe Erramuzpe, director of operations at USFloors. …The director asserts that USFloors suppliers are required to "certify that the material is not produced in violation of local laws and regulations" and closes the note stating that it "fully supports" the report's research work.

…Another regular customer of Bonardi da Amazônia…is Ronardi Comercial Exportadora de Madeiras…. Its clients include US companies such as Timber Holdings USA.

…Ronardi stated that it "vehemently rejects any violation of the labor law."

Timber Holdings said…"Our company is completely against any kind of slave labor and illegal timber trade, and it should be noted that Timber Holdings was one of the first companies in the world to invest in an outsourced audit for each shipment of imported timber from Brazil," says the company.
