Deal reached over Trafigura payout in I.Coast

Lawyers for...multinational Trafigura and victims of toxic waste poisoning in the Ivory Coast said they have reached a deal over distributing millions of dollars in damages. The deal reached on Wednesday unblocks payment of 33 million euros (44.8 million dollars) in compensation to 31,000 victims of the disaster, which was frozen by a court order last year. Claude Gohourou, president of the victims' association, said distribution of the funds "will be carried out jointly with the English lawyers" for Trafigura, Leigh Day and Company. The payout, amounting to around 1,150 euros (around 1,560 dollars) to each victim, will begin in March, said Kouame Klemet, an Abidjan-based lawyer for Leigh Day.
