New Zealand declared a 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in 1978 and a fish quota management system in 1986...[Compliance] with NZ law is set out in the 2006 “Code of Practice on Foreign Fishing Crew” and NZ fishing companies must adhere to the code if they are to be issued with immigration visas and permits for foreign fishing crew...In May seven Indonesian crewmen from Fishing Vessel Shin Ji stopped work on the vessel due to abuse. Later, they fled their hotel in fear for their safety after intimidation from company representatives...These crew are victims of; brutal beatings, sexual harassment, inhuman punishments, working days without rest, accidents due to fatigue, denied medical attention / given expired medicine, unsafe work practices / inadequate protective clothing...This is modern slavery in first world New Zealand.
