Gregory Gondwe, Managing Director of the Platform for Investigative Journalism (PIJ) in Malawi, was detained by police on April 5, 2022 over a story that the platform published on March 30, 2022. The article revealed that the Attorney General allowed the government to make payments to the company Malachite FZE, belonging to a corruption suspect restricted from public contracts, to procure eight anti-riot water cannons for police. Police allegedly tried to force Gondwe to disclose his sources.
