...The lack of robust legislation on new forms of labour and employment like gig and platform work, which needs to go beyond issues of social security, have an impact on gig workers–particularly women who have to struggle to remain in the labour force and earn a living wage...

“If employer relation is defined all existing laws become applicable. In addition to the welfare board, states can have dispute resolution, if possible through the Industrial Disputes Act which will solve a lot of issues,” said Kingshuk Sarkar, a labour economist and faculty at the Goa Institute of Management

But this comes with limited social benefits and less bargaining power as age-old issues of occupational segregation and gender pay gaps follow women into the new platform-based gig economy...
