Interparfums, Inc.'s response re. child labour in the Egypt jasmine industry

[...]

Our teams, who discovered these issues through the BBC report, have always worked with companies recognized for their CSR strategies, particularly regarding responsible purchasing practices. Both Ecovadis and extra-financial rating agencies (Sustainalytics and MSCI) have rated them very positively. Thus, these revelations were a surprise to us...

Our action plan is as follows:

  • After identifying the perfumes sourced from this supply chain, Interparfums, Inc. has asked all fragrance houses to work on reformulations to substitute this channel. Various options are possible: sourcing from a more robust and better-controlled vertical supply chain within Egypt or changing the sourcing country.
  • ...official letters from Jean Madar and Philippe Benacin were sent to fragrance house leaderships (Givaudan, DSM Firmenich, IFF, Robertet, and Symrise). The letter demands the elimination of all child labor by implementing appropriate measures such as introducing a living wage, setting up childcare facilities, improving health and safety coverage, and establishing better working conditions in the fields for adults. Additionally, we call for a change in auditing methods to prevent sectors from being wrongly certified.

The CSR Chief Officer of Interparfums, Inc. is currently meeting with our perfumers' responsible sourcing and CSR managers to discuss their practices and gain a better understanding of their specific situations.

Their due diligence operations identified the issue raised in the report as early as January 2023. Corrective actions were taken by them in the first quarter of 2023 with willing local partners, and some partners have also been delisted. They expect the 2023 harvest to comply with our human rights standards, and particular attention is being paid to the upcoming harvest.

Additionally, the jasmine coalition, in line with UN guidelines and in collaboration with the ILO and local authorities, is working on deploying a monitored action plan with defined KPIs. Inspired by the coalition's work on the Turkish rose, the approach aims to improve responsibility in this sector. The KPIs focus on child labor, living income, health and safety, and child care.
