On 18 April 2022, human rights defender Mariton Jusayu Ipuana was assassinated in Uribia, La Guajira, Colombia. He was a traditional authority of the Wayúu people and a member of the human rights organization Nación Wayúu. Armed men entered his home in the Malirrou community at 10 p.m., threatening residents before tying them up and executing Mariton in front of his wife, children, and community members.
Just days before Mariton’s assassination, Wayúu community members protested in front of the Fiscalía in La Guajira, demanding justice for Simón Darío Laguna Epiayu, a 10-year-old boy killed on June 13 after being hit by a vehicle linked to the Guajira I wind farm project, operated by WIND 1000 in partnership with Isagen.
