Snapshot: In 2019, communities in Apurímac, Peru, represented by the Front for the Defence of the Interests and Development of the Province of Cotabambas, filed a lawsuit against the Chinese mining consortium operating the Las Bambas copper mine and the national police to the Tambobamba Combined Civil Court. The lawsuit alleges violations of community rights and contends that modifications made to the Environmental Impact Assessment resulted in certain pollution reduction measures not being implemented. Additionally, they argue that the agreement between the national police and the mining consortium compromise the impartiality and independence of the police. The Public Prosecutor's Office has defended the legality of the agreement between the National Police and Las Bambas. The case is ongoing.
