As empresas multinacionais de mineração e de gás têm investido biliões de dólares em Moçambique nos últimos dez anos...O crescimento explosivo do sector mineiro, sem salvaguardas adequadas, pode levar à violação dos direitos humanos e a uma perda de oportunidades para reduzir a pobreza generalizada. Na Província de Tete, conhecida pelo seu potencial rico em carvão, as comunidades locais foram deslocadas e reassen- tadas de 2009-2011 devido às operações ligadas ao carvão pelas empresas Vale e Rio Tinto e estas têm enfrentado distúrbios significativos e persistentes ligados ao acesso a alimentos, água e trabalho…Tanto a Vale como a Rio Tinto assumiram compromissos públicos e privados para melhorar o padrão de vida das comunidades reassentadas…Apesar destas melhorias, o fornecimento da prometida compensação e melhorias na infra-estrutura…foram adiadas... Novos reassentamentos, incluindo os previstos pelas Jindal Steel and Power Limited e Rio Tinto irão proporcionar um importante teste em relação à eficácia da evolução das salvaguardas.
